Beach report: high chance of showers

Craig Holden predicts a high chance of showers over the weekend, but light winds will help keep things mild for swimmers.
Though light winds will decrease wave heights, Craig Holden says local board-riders can still expect small but clean waves.

In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden predicts a high chance of showers over the weekend, but light winds will help keep things mild for swimmers.

Weather

Well, it has been a reasonable week of weather across the local region this week, with mostly blue skies and sunshine, along with light to moderate winds and mild temperatures – and just the odd, scattered shower thrown in as well!

Now looking ahead to today and then across the weekend, there is both good and bad news for beach goers – the good news being that the winds will only be light, but the bad news is that there is a high chance of showers through today and tomorrow, so keep an eye on the sky when planning your trip to the beach.

Today’s winds will be from the E/NE to N/NE at around 10 knots or so, before tomorrow brings us light and variable (W/SW to E/SE to E/NE) at around 5 to 10 knots.

Sunday will then bring S/SW to E/SE to E/SE winds at around 10+ knots.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have not been too bad during the past week and particularly so through the mornings when the winds have been lighter and slightly offshore.

These good swimming conditions should also continue through today and then across the weekend, with the forecast suggesting light but variable winds, which will keep the ocean quite mild for the most part, and perfect for swimmers.

The best time for swimmers to hit the beach will be any time through the morning and up to around midday.

For today, your best beaches for swimming will be Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach, but then across the weekend, beaches such as Hervey Bay, Agnes Water, Nielson Park, Mon Repos and Moore Park may be slightly better.

Please check with the Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, AND most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Today and weekdays – 9 am to 5 pm at Agnes Water only

Saturday and Sunday – 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only

Surfing

Local board-riders have once again been enjoying plenty of clean and fun-sized waves about local beaches across last weekend and again during this past week.

Despite the wave heights dropping slightly from Wednesday, we should still expect more small but clean and fun waves across the next few days, with perhaps even a slight increase through today as well.

The NE winds may be a nuisance today, but more favourable winds are forecast for the weekend. Try from early morning through until late morning to midday for best results.

Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads may surprise today, but then check out Agnes Water, Nielson Park, Mon Repos and Moore Park across the weekend. Good Luck.

For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers the forecast does not suggest there will be much wind over the coming days to produce a slick downwind run, so instead enjoy the smoother conditions on offer for a more relaxed paddle at the beach – and maybe a few fun waves.
