Hughes Road roundabout nearing completion

The project will support the ongoing growth in the area and once complete, will feature safe and accessible crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing connectivity between emerging developments.

Significant underground service works and construction of the roundabout structure are among the major milestones already met by Bundaberg Regional Council as it upgrades the Hughes Road and Blain Street intersection.

The project will support the ongoing growth in the area and once complete, will feature safe and accessible crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing connectivity between emerging developments.

Access to businesses along Hughes Road will continue to remain open throughout the works.

Roads and Infrastructure portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the upgrade, which experienced setbacks due to Cyclone Alfred and subsequent rainfall in March and April, was now expected to be completed in June.

“While the weather did impact our original timeline, we’ve made significant progress and are on track to deliver a safer, more efficient intersection for the community,” Cr Statham-Blair said.

To date, major milestones have been achieved, including:

• Relocation of the existing water main

• Installation of more than 1,000 metres of underground electrical conduits

• Ergon Energy’s installation of new underground cabling, power poles, and removal of overhead lines

• Construction of the roundabout structure

• Excavation and replacement of unsuitable ground material to meet Council standards

Remaining works include:

• Road base construction and kerbing

• Installation of bicycle ramps, pedestrian crossings, and footpaths

• Asphalt surfacing and road signage

• Landscaping and fencing improvements

Accessing local businesses during the works:

Council has maintained access to local businesses in the area during the works.

Motorists can reach the area via the intersection of Hughes Road, Wessels Road, and Causeway Drive.

From Bargara Road, drivers should turn onto Seaview Drive, then Wessels Road, and proceed to Hughes Road.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we complete this important infrastructure upgrade,” Cr Statham-Blair said.

“Once finished, the new roundabout will significantly improve traffic flow and safety in the area.”

Council encourages residents to stay updated via the Our Bundaberg Region website here.

The roundabout was identified as part of the Bargara Emerging Communities Infrastructure Planning (ECIP) project which won an Institute of Public Works Australasia (QNT) Innovation and Sustainability in Water award and a Stormwater Queensland Excellence in Strategic or Master Planning award in 2023.

The works are funded by the Australian Federal Government under the Local Roads Community Infrastructure Program.
