Sweet potato farmers in Papua New Guinea have been gifted football jerseys thanks to CQUniversity and the Bundaberg community.

The donation was made by Kirt Hainzer, a Senior Research Officer at CQUni Bundaberg who has been working on a project with farmers and their extended families in the remote Eastern Highlands of PNG.

“We visited a number of communities in the Asaro Valley of the Eastern Highlands of PNG and were able to distribute jerseys donated by Bundaberg locals (individuals) as well as State Member for Bundaberg David Batt MP, Greensill’s Farming, Lindsay Rural and CQUni staff,” Mr Hainzer said.

“A huge thank you to the organisations who helped coordinate this, and a massive thank you to the individuals who kindly donated to some very hard-working PNG farmers.

“The people of PNG love rugby league and the jerseys were very well-received by the farmers, with the Maroons jersey creating quite a buzz. The children’s jerseys were also a surprise to the communities who were especially grateful to receive kid’s clothing.”

A second community of farmers will receive the remaining portion of undonated jerseys later in the year.
