The welcome sounds of drums can be heard again in the Bundaberg region, with Drumming Circles resuming as COVID-19 restrictions ease.
Cynthia Hoogstraten, President of Unity Drummers Inc. has welcomed the start of the weekly community drumming circles.
“Like many community events, Unity Drummers Inc. had to suspend our weekly drum circles and Full Moon Drumming events at the start of the COVID pandemic,” Cynthia said.
“Since restrictions were eased, the weekly classes returned last week, although our Full Moon events at Bargara will have to wait, as too many people generally attend.
Cynthia said people were keen to start up again to rebuild connections as well as boost their mental well-being.
“We had groups of 8 participants join our Drumming Circles the first week at Bargara, Innes Park and Bundaberg, although, with government guidelines, we can cater for 20 people.
“We have a COVID Plan in place, which can be sighted on signing in.
This includes the social distancing of 1.5m, not sharing drums, staying at home if unwell and good hygiene practices.”
Drumming Circles connect people
Drumming is not only fun, but it also connects people on a social level through a common interest.
“It is an excellent exercise for our brain activity, as is often quoted, “if you don't use it, you lose it,” Cynthia said.
“It’s a simple activity to learn and one does not need to be a musician, so it is open to all ages and abilities.”
Long term member of the Unity Drummers Johnny Zirilli agrees.
“The drum circle on a Tuesday morning is a great way to start the day with single beats, great laughs and a connection to the local community.
“Playing the drum is a therapeutic experience with no experience needed for a relaxing time.”
Shelley McDonald is also looked forward to having the regular drumming circle back in action.
“It gives me something to look forward to each week,” Shelley said.
For those interested in getting out in the fresh air, having some laughs and learning a new skill, Drum Circles are open at Bargara Surf Lifesaving Club at 7am on Mondays, Innes Park Reserve at 7am on Tuesdays and the Gazebo at Alexandra Park Bundaberg at 7am on Wednesdays.
