Bundaberg Sailing Club Commodore John Learmonth is over the moon with a new pontoon that will assist boaties accessing the Burnett River.

A $35,000 State Government grant enabled construction of the new piece of infrastructure after the old pontoon, situated at the club on Strathdees Road, was damaged during the floods.

Mr Learmonth said the work was greatly needed.

“It became damaged during the floods and, being 20 years old, it was definitely time for an upgrade,” he said.

“This structure was built using all local tradespeople and was designed specifically to withstand the floodwaters.”

Mr Learmonth said the new design would also help with fast-flowing tides experienced in that particular area of the Burnett River.

“We are on part of the river that is very exposed,” he said.

“This new design will help us greatly.”

The official opening was a special event today with members of the club, John Learmonth and Burnett MP Stephen Bennett.
