Sandhills Sports Club in Bargara has lodged an operational works application to begin a major upgrade, estimated to be worth $8 million.
Bundaberg Regional Council planning and development spokesperson Cr Ross Sommerfeld said it was positive to see work progressing on the development which had been approved in 2018.
“This development represents a significant upgrade to the sporting and community facilities offered by Sandhills Sports Club, formerly known as Bargara Bowls Club,” Cr Sommerfeld said.
“One of three bowls greens will be lost to the redevelopment which will allow for the construction of a clubhouse to incorporate an extensive bar area, gaming, bistro and sports lounge in addition to a children’s area and administration offices.
“The approval also allows the redeveloped facility to operate from 9am to midnight seven days per week which will add to the lifestyle and entertainment opportunities of residents living in coastal suburbs.”
Additional car parking and a bus service have also been incorporated in to the proposal for the redeveloped Sandhills Sports Club with a total of 106 car parks to be included.
Cr Sommerfeld said the development was approved with conditions.
“The club proponents are mindful that the facility is located in a residential area and have addressed noise, spill lighting and trading issues,” he said.
“There are some 40 conditions attached to the development approval to address potential impacts, including environmental issues relating to possible impact on turtles.”
The Sandhills development application was lodged by Bundaberg & District RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc which is the owner of the 1.34 hectare site at Bargara with frontage to Whalley and Tanner Streets.
