Bundaberg had driest-ever year in 2019

Bundaberg driest-ever year drought
Bundaberg had its driest-ever year in 2019 with just 334mm of rain.

Bundaberg had the driest-ever year recorded in 2019, breaking the previous record low that was set in 1902.

Just 319.8mm of rain fell in 12 months, beating the historical low of 338mm in 1902.

The Bundaberg Post Office rain gauge ceased recording in 1990 while the Airport station opened in 1942.

The driest ever year previously at Bundaberg Airport was 488mm in 2001.

There is little rain forecast in the next week and the longer-term outlook isn’t promising.

The weather bureau says that January to March 2020 daytime temperatures are likely to be above average across Australia.

“The rainfall outlook for January to March 2020 indicates most of the country will have roughly equal chances of a wetter or drier than average three months,” the bureau’s climate outlook states.

“While outlooks for drier-than-average conditions ease heading into 2020, several months of above-average rainfall would be needed to see a recovery from current long-term rainfall deficiencies.”

The driest-ever year started with just 6.8mm in January compared with the long-term mean of 171.4.

The drought was entrenched by September when just 0.2mm was recorded.

Even the wettest month (March 81.4) was below average.

Despite the drought, the Federal Government has yet to recognise the Bundaberg Region for assistance under its Drought Communities Program.

The warmest temperature in 2019 was 36.2 degrees on 21 February and 5 December.

The coldest temperature was the overnight minimum of 4.8 on 13 August.
