Mum and daughter take a shot in winning hockey match

Jessica Asnicar goes for goal in their Bundaberg Hockey Division 1 Women’s clash with All Blacks at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Mother and daughter Angela and Jessica Asnicar were both among the scorers as reigning premiers Waves Cities powered on unbeaten in the Bundaberg Hockey Division 1 Women’s competition with a 9-0 white-wash of All Blacks at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

But another of their young guns Milee Flanders, playing along-side her mother Kristine, led the charge with a hat-trick of goals, while Anna Smith also featured with a double.

Raiders/Rovers  won the other Women’s match against Arrows/Athletics 3-1 with Amanda Wightman a match winner with a two-goal haul.

Dean Wightman also struck as Raiders/Rovers’ Division 1 Men also repelled Arrows 3-1.

Meanwhile, Waves Cities’ Men, who have been beaten grand finalists for the past four years, recorded their third straight big win over four-times defending champions All Blacks, this time 11-1 with Joel Latham on fire with five scorchers.

FOOTBALL

Across The Waves (ATW) and Fraser Flames further increased their joint-lead in the Wide Bay Premier League Men’s Division with more dominant wins in Round 12 on Saturday, with the former accounting for Sunbury Blues 5-2 in Maryborough, and the latter far too good for SC Corinthians at Martens Oval, getting home 6-0.

They are now each on 30 points, a massive 10 clear of Brothers-Aston Villa (BAV) who were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw by 8th placed hosts KSS Jets on Saturday, while 2020 grand final victors United Park Eagles burst out of a form slump and moved back into the top four on 19 points with a 5-2 blitz of Doon Villa at Martens Oval.

Waves and Fraser both have 10 wins and 1 loss to their credit, with the Flames’ only defeat being a 6-1 thumping by Waves on 27th March, while Waves’ only hiccough was in the following round after the Easter break, being ambush by BAV 2-1 on 10th April.

The two heavyweights will meet again in three weeks’ time at Waves on 10th July, when the winner could strike a major blow in the race for the league championships.

Brothers Brendan and Jake Davis led the UPE revival on Saturday, each grabbing doubles.

In the Premier League Women’s Division, Sunbury Blues wrapped up the league championship with two rounds to go, edging out their hosts ATW 2-1 on Friday night, with UPE bowing out of the race for No. 1 position when they fell victim to KSS Jets 3-1 at Martens Oval at the same time.

Meanwhile, Bingera remained in fifth place but got to within one point of fourth seeds ATW with a 1-0 dispatch of cellar dwellers Tinana at Martens Oval on Saturday.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Jackson Brown wreaked havoc with four tries as the all-conquering South Kolan Sharks went on another feeding frenzy in the Northern Districts Premiership, downing their brave but outnumbered hosts Miriam Vale Magpies 48-18 in their Round 9 showdown at Gary Larson Oval on Saturday.

South Kolan Sharks player/coach Andrew Filo holds up a pass in a recent Northern Districts showdown with Miriam Vale Magpies. The two sides met again in Miriam Vale on Saturday with Andy again among a galaxy of stars as the Sharks continued to circle towards the premiership.

By the win, the Sharks sealed the minor premiership with three rounds to go, while in the earlier match on the program, Latu Vea bagged a hat-trick of tries as Gin Gin Hawks wrapped up second position on the ladder with a 52-24 demolition of two-times defending premiers Avondale Tigers.

The Hawks also continued their total domination of the Women’s league Tag, outclassing title winners of the past two season the Tigers 48-0 with doubles to Jessica Galea, who continued her white-hot form, and Karrie Hills.

AFL: Stalwart Griffin Webb kicked three goals, but it was another tough day at the office for the win-less Brothers Bulldogs in the Wide Bay Marquis Macadamias Senior Premiership, suffering another buffeting at the hands of 2019 champions, 2020 grand finalists and hosts Bay Power 15.16 (106) to 6.3 (39) on Saturday.

The Dogs were also soundly beaten by Power in Reserves, by 62 points.

NETBALL: Just one match was played in the Bundaberg Warren Family Homes Division 1 Premiership at the Superpark on Saturday, with Natives Magpies plucking Waves Blue 45-23 in their Round 9 clash.

It was the Magpies’ first win of the season as they reversed the result of their first clash with Waves Blue this year, when they went downing fighting 36-30.
