After suffering their first loss of the season last week – against Wests Panthers 14-6 – Past Brothers now face a Rugby League Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership Round 9 top-of-the-table showdown with Easts at Salter Oval at 6pm today.
They are on high alert as the Magpies will be able to join them on 13 points if they are successful.
The Magpies are fresh from an 88-7 plucking of Hervey Bay Seagulls when five-eighth Jayden Smith had a field day, chalking up 30 points with two tries and 11 conversions.
Captain and centre Delroy Tanner wreaked havoc with four tries, and veteran lock Corey Chapman and flashy winger Sakiusa Dreunimolea each also bagged doubles.
In the early game on the program at 4.15pm, if the Panthers can reproduce their performance against the Brethren, they should be too strong for Wallaroos, who again struggled away from home, being mauled by Waves Tigers 34-6 on the weekend with hooker Sam Tobin a hat-trick hero.
Meanwhile, fallen premiers Hervey Bay will host the rampaging Tigers at Stafford Park at 5pm, and after tallying just 35 points while leaking a massive 510 in seven games played, the Seagulls’ nightmare looks set to continue.
In the Northern Districts Men’s Premiership, it was the Dau duo who co-starred as Avondale Tigers roared against Miriam Vale Magpies 38-16 at Discovery Coast on Saturday with fullback Samson grabbing four tries and his brother and winger Billy crossing twice.
Isis Devils were also victorious, bouncing back from their first loss of the season the previous week, to Avondale, toughing out a 26-20 win over South Kolan Sharks with five-eighth Chris Wicks doubling up.
In the Women’s League Tag, Marlins played their hearts out at home, and they matched two-times defending champions Gin Gin throughout, but Hawkettes extended their winning run of over two years with a Jessica Galea try enough for a 4-0 victory.
This Sunday at Tegege, the winless Magpies face a tough task against the Sharks at 1.15pm, before the Tigers suit up against the Hawks at 2.45pm, while in the League Tag, the Hawkettes do battle with Tigress at 11.15am, and the Marlins suit up against the Devils at 12.15pm.
Rhys Coombe bagged eight goals as hosts Brothers Bulldogs stood up to be counted in the AFL Wide Bay Senior Men’s Premiership on Saturday, turning the tables on cross-town arch-rivals Waves Eagles in a big way, powering to a 15.10 (100) to 4.6 (30) triumph.
But the Eagles continued on unbeaten in their Takalvans Senior Women’s Premiership title defence with a 4.6 (30) to 1.2 (8) dispatch of an improving Bulldogs.
There are just one Senior Men’s and one Senior Women’s matches today, with the Bulldogs away to Power, with the Bombers and Eagles’ teams all having byes.
Bundaberg Autobarn Bulls moved into second place on the Basketball Queensland State League 2 Men’s ladder after winning two of their three matches on a tough road assignment last weekend.
They outgunned Logan Thunder 93-79 on Friday night with Jesse Lomax leading the charge with 29 points, before disposing of RedCity Roar 84-76 on Saturday with Jarrod Sheppard nailing 24 points, but fatigue was an obvious factor as they went down to Southern Districts Spartans 97-88 on Sunday despite a 22-point haul from Aiden Potter.
Bundaberg Bears landed in third place on the Women’s ladder after losses to Thunder 63-57 and Roar 70-58 butclinching a thrilling 79-77 win over Spartans with LucyWells standing tall with 27 points.
The Bundaberg teams have this weekend off, before home games against Roar next Sunday.
Raiders/Rovers will carry Bundaberg’s hopes in the Premier League Grand Finals on 17th June after their Women, who had placed fourth on the ladder, upset minor premiers and previously unbeaten Arrows/Athletics 3-2 in the semi-finals at Hinkler Park last Saturday with Abby Heffernan a match winner with a double.
Waves’ Cities, who had placed third, were knocked out by second-seeds Granville Rovers 5-0.
Men’s minor premiers Granville Tigers were too good for fourth placed Cities, who were the only Bundaberg side to qualify for the men’s semi’s.
Division 1 matches will be played today, with All Blacks v Raiders/Rovers with the women at 3.20pm, and men at 4.40pm, while Arrows’ Women will aim up against Cities at 6pm, with their men’s duel to follow at 7.20pm.
Young gun Preston Cox grabbed a hat-trick of goals as Across The Waves rolled on in their Football Queensland Premier League Wide Bay Men’s title defence with a 4-0 shut-out of hosts Doon Villa in Maryborough on Saturday.
But United Park Eagles (UPE) slipped to third place on goal difference behind Fraser Flames with a 1-0 defeat at their hands at Martens Oval, while Irish ace Gary O’Donnell struck four times to star in hosts Bingera’s 8-0 white-wash of SC Corinthians.
Today at Martens Oval at 6pm, UPE will be up against the might of Waves, and Corinthians square off against Doon Villa, and Bingera are away to the Jets.
In the Wide Bay Women’s League last week, Ashlea West featured with a double as Waves downed Doon Villa 4-1, but UPE were burnt by the Flames 9-1.
Waves’ Women played UPE last night, while Bingera were away to Jets.
Three times defending champions Waves Gold were again in a class of their own in the Warren Family Homes Division 1 Premiership at the Superpark on Saturday, weathering Brothers Cyclones 64-16.
Their Blue side was brave in a 49-45 loss to Natives Magpies, while Brothers Hurricanes rumbled against Alloway Blue 51-44.
Today, at 3.30pm, Alloway Blue meets Waves Gold, and at 5pm, it is Magpies against Cyclones, and Hurricanes to unleash against Waves Blue.
