Bundaberg has once again been named Australia’s most generous city for 2023 by fundraising platform GoFundMe.

GoFundMe revealed Australia’s most generous cities today, based on donations per capita for 2023, in its annual Year In Help report.

Bundaberg moved up from third place last year and is back on top after previously being recognised as being the most generous city in 2020.

Mayor Jack Dempsey said the generosity of the Bundaberg Region was evident throughout the year, and particularly around Christmas time as locals came together to help those in need through the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, which raises funds to provide food hampers for local residents in need of a helping hand to make their Christmas special.

He said the whole community should be proud knowing the kindness of individuals and groups to one another is what makes the region the best place to live.

“I am incredibly proud that the Bundaberg Region was ranked as #1 for GoFundMe’s most generous city in Australia for 2023,” he said.

“This recognition is a testament to our region’s culture of kindness and compassion which defines us.

“It is a reflection of the countless acts of kindness, big and small, that happen in our community every day. A sincere thank you to each and every resident in the Bundaberg Region community.

“Together, we’ve proven that when a community comes together, incredible things can happen.”

GoFundMe Australia Regional Director Nicola Britton said calls for support were answered quickly in cities due to the close-knit nature of Australian communities.

“It is equal parts humbling and inspiring to see a record number of donations on the platform this year, especially against the backdrop of economic uncertainty for so many Australians,” she said.

“Despite the challenging circumstances, compassion and generosity is certainly not showing signs of slowing down.

“Bundaberg should be proud to be recognised as this year’s most generous town; as should every person that started, was the beneficiary of, or donated to, a GoFundMe fundraiser or helped spread the word.

“All of these kind actions truly make a real, tangible difference to Australians and their communities, day in and day out.”
