Beyond Boundaries is an exciting new series of creative workshops that will be held later
this year.

The project, for young individuals (aged 18-35), focusses on the exploration of queer stories as told by the Bundaberg LGBTQIA+ community.

The workshops are designed to empower participants to reclaim their narrative and embrace their identity through storytelling.

The project offers a safe space for self-expression and creativity to push the boundaries of
storytelling.

Inspired by the popular webcomic Heartstopper, participants will have the opportunity to work with different media to tell their story.

Collaborating with community stakeholders, organisers identified the need to provide a safe
space for 18-35 year olds in Bundaberg, addressing mental health concerns within the
LGBTQIA+ community.

Workshop organiser Brianna Laskai said that Beyond Boundaries seeks to reduce stigma,
provide creative outlets, and foster a supportive environment for storytellers and audience
members.

“By engaging in community discussion, we hope to create positive social change, driven by
the empowerment of the younger queer generation,” Brianna said.

Wide Bay Kids Community Inc has received a grant from The Social Shift, funded by the
Department of Social Services Local Services Plans – Community-Led Support Fund to
facilitate Beyond Boundaries.

Wide Bay Kids’ Angela Twyford said the organisation was proud to be part of the project.

“We hope it will contribute to strengthening connection and support within the queer
community of Bundaberg by providing an accepting space for queer people to collaborate”,
Angela said.

Workshops will be held in June, concluding with a public exhibition to celebrate pride month.
