The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra (ARCO) will bring luminous music to Bundaberg when they tour ‘The Sunrise’ this September.
Supported by a grant from Bundaberg Regional Council Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), ‘The Sunrise’ brings together five principal musicians from ARCO for an intimate performance of chamber music, playing works from beloved composers, old and new.
Presented in the gorgeous acoustics of Christ Church Anglican, Bundaberg, the concert is the highlight of ARCO’s two day visit to the region during which they will also host school and community engagement programs.
Local musicians with the Bundaberg Youth Orchestra and Bella Canna String Quintet will take part in a special workshop.
ARCO will also present their acclaimed Voyage of Musical Discovery school education program at Bundaberg State High School, a 90-minute concert and demonstration that pairs classical music with a brand-new commissioned work from Brisbane composer Nicole Murphy.
Prior to ‘The Sunrise’, community members can enjoy a pre-concert Talk&Tea with the musicians and a chance to see up close to their beautiful and historic instruments, including a rare basset clarinet.
Concert program
The ARCO orchestra features co-artistic directors Rachael Beesley (violin) and Nicole van Bruggen (clarinet) who will be joined by Alison Rayner (violin), Stephen King (viola) and Natasha Kraemer (cello), all nationally and internationally acclaimed experts in historically informed performance.
The program takes in a sweep of classical quartets, including the buoyant Mozart K.157, the melancholy Cavatina from Beethoven’s Op.130, and a turbulent Finnish landscape by the little-known Bernhard Crusell.
At the pinnacle is Haydn’s ‘Sunrise’ quartet in a sparkling 18th century clarinet arrangement by Vincenzo Gambaro, highlighting the clarinet’s lush tones.
The Sunrise tour is supported by Arts Queensland, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, and RADF grants from Bundaberg Regional Council and Fraser Coast Regional Council.
RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Regional Councils to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
