Bundaberg Regional Council is supporting a new specialist disability accommodation project in Bundaberg West through its Projects of Regional Significance (PORS) program.
The program, which recognises developments that bring significant economic or social benefits to the region, offers discounts on infrastructure charges for eligible developments.
One recent application for the PORS scheme has been submitted on behalf of Apollo SDA Pty Ltd for the development of a specialist disability accommodation facility at 30 Adams Street.
The facility, completed in partnership with Palms Homes Pty Ltd, aims to provide high-quality housing solutions for residents with complex cognitive disabilities.
In its submission, Apollo SDA outlined the significant social impact and community need for this type of accommodation, emphasising a commitment to developing tailored, non-institutional “Robust Specialist Disability Accommodation” within Bundaberg.
It also detailed the development at 30 Adams Street as the first of its kind in the region, offering a dedicated solution for local residents who may be unable to sustainably reside in standard housing due to complex care needs.
Bundaberg Regional Council recently voted in favour of offering a 50% discount on infrastructure charges for the development.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the endorsement of the project, under the PORS scheme, highlighted the significant role Council played in supporting vital community initiatives.
“Projects like these embody our commitment to supporting an inclusive community where every resident has access to secure and suitable housing,” she said.
“Council is pleased to support the work of Apollo SDA and its partners as they address the pressing need for disability accommodation in our region.”
About PORS
Council’s Projects of Regional Significance program recognises projects which will provide a significant economic boost to the region.
The program defines significant projects as those with a monetary value of $15 million or greater or providing more than 50 direct local jobs.
While projects which meet all of these thresholds automatically qualify under the program Council can also consider how projects provide special community benefit.
Qualifying projects may be eligible for a discount of up to 100 per cent off the infrastructure charges levied for the development.
Projects already supported under this program include Gina’s Table and the expansion of Okara’s operations at the Port.
