Bundaberg Regional Council is moving forward with emergency actions to address significant erosion at Moore Park Beach.
It comes after a section of land at Bob Nielsen Park was closed off to the public last week when high tides battered the area.
Since then, erosion has caused significant damage to the Surf Lifesaving building, leaving some of its structure exposed.
Council has engaged a structural engineer to assess the site and a safety management plan is being developed to guide the necessary works this week.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said Council was committed to ensuring public safety while also safeguarding the beach’s environmental and structural integrity.
“We are taking immediate steps to address the erosion at Moore Park Beach and are working closely with key stakeholders and local police, to ensure the situation is managed effectively,” she said.
“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority.”
Emergency actions include:
- Pedestrian fencing and safety signage currently in place.
- Queensland Police Service (QPS) to monitor the site.
- Council collaborating with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation to finalise treatments to prevent further erosion.
- Immediate reinforcement options, such as sandbags, will be implemented tomorrow.
- Environmental checks have been completed, turtle nesting sites have been relocated out of the work zone and monitoring for hatchlings.
- Debris removal from the site.
Mayor Blackburn said safety works would continue for the remainder of the week during low tide.
“We are carefully coordinating these efforts to minimise disruption while ensuring that Moore Park Beach is properly protected from further erosion,” she said.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust our actions as needed.”
Surf Lifesaving patrols
Community patrols will be focused on the area south of the surf club, opposite the caravan park.
Nippers’ remaining activities are scheduled for February 9 and 16, and March 2, 9 and 23.
Volunteer patrols will continue on Sundays and public holidays through May 5.
Lifeguard services will operate Saturdays from 1 pm to 5 pm as well as weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm (excluding public holidays) during the Easter school holidays (April 7 to 17).
