After many years operating the Kolan Gardens Aged Care Service, Churches of Christ in Queensland has made an offer to purchase the property from Bundaberg Regional Council.

Within the offer Churches of Christ noted its commitment to the ongoing provision of aged care services as well as continuing to offer employment opportunities within the region.

Council owns the property at 6E Mulgrave Street in Gin Gin and has been landlord to the organisation since the facility opened in 2004.

Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said Council had essentially been acting in the role of landlord.

“All residential and accommodation agreements for residents within the facility are managed by Churches of Christ, as the licenced provider,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“This offer to purchase the property is a positive result for our community with Churches of Christ outlining its commitment to the continuation of the aged care service as owner of the property.”

“From the perspective of residents Churches of Christ has assured Council that there will be no impacts on residents.”

CEO Bill Lyon said Churches of Christ looked forward to continuing excellent service to residents.

“The only change is that we now own the property,” he said.

“We thank the Council for working with us and look forward to being a valuable part of this wonderful community.”

Mayor Blackburn said the move to sell the property was part of Council’s plan to get “back on track”.

“I have been very vocal about my desire to see Council return to its core business.”

“This aged care facility is a vital service within our community but it is not within the realm of Local Government.”

“We now have a result where aged care professionals who are already managing the property and all of its tenants will take the lead.”

Following the decision in Council’s Ordinary Meeting on 21 February, the CEO has been authorised to enter into a contract of sale with Churches of Christ Queensland.
