Two new state-of-the-art synthetic bowling greens are now complete and ready for competition at The Waves Sports Complex.
The Waves Mens Bowls Club president Keith Jobling said the upgrade to synthetic greens was one of the biggest investments the club had seen, adding it's the first time The Waves Bowls Club has done any major renovations to the grounds.
Keith said the upgrade to synthetic greens would not only give the players a better surface to play on, but they would also see significant annual savings of more than $100,000 per year.
He said these savings would come from not having to buy supplies to maintain the old natural grass green anymore, as well as a reduction in greenkeeper fees.
“We haven’t got to spray for algae anymore – we used to have a lot of trouble with that,” Keith said.
“We will save a lot not having to buy the sprays or fertilisers.
“It’s going to make a big difference.”
New greens allow for better games
The Waves Bowls Club's new synthetic turf will allow for better games to be played as the greens will have a more stable pace for bowlers.
As The Waves Mens Bowls Club president for the past 11 years, Keith said he had seen the old grass greens' condition vary, depending on the weather and climate.
He said a wet grass green would produce a slow speed, while a dry grass green would see the bowl speed up, making it difficult to perform consistently.
“The pace of the green in measured over the entire green, and a slow green can be 12 seconds, and between 19-20 second for a fast green,” Keith said.
“Anything between 14.5 and 16 seconds is a good pace.
“Our new green will have an overall average of 15.5 seconds, which is a good pace to bowl for competition.
“And the new greens won’t change with rain or dry weather conditions, so we are all really looking forward to that.”
Keith said the installation of the latest synthetic greens along with the previous addition of shade and new seating at The Waves Bowling Club, made it one the best facilities in the Bundaberg Region to play lawn bowls.
He said The Waves Bowling Club players were now all anxiously waiting for the COVID-19 regulations to ease so that could step out on to the new synthetic bowling greens and give their best shot bowl.
