Gelato lovers can enjoy a delicious, free dessert after collecting rubbish from our beach areas thanks to one local cafe's clean-up initiative.
Owner of The Windmill Cafe Joey Caruana said the idea came about after brainstorming with his team on what to with the empty buckets from food producers.
“We came up with the idea of a bit of a collect and give initaitive,” he said.
“We have spread our empty buckets right across the Bargara coastline.
“If you can fill the bucket up with rubbish from our beaches and bring them into The Windmill, we will swap it out for a gelato.”
Mr Caruana said when posting about the clean-up initiative on Facebook, he was surprised to find it had reached over 30,000 people.
“We thought it would just be something we could do for the community but we have had positive messages and comments from all over Australia,” he said.
Proud locals helping the environment
Living in the Bargara area himself, Mr Caruana said it was important for him and his staff to do something for and with the community.
“We are part of the community, our staff live in the community and our guests live in the community,” he said.
“It's a fun thing to do, an easy thing for the community and just a good idea to help clean up.”
He said residents had so far been enjoying participating in the clean-up as much as he and his staff had enjoyed implementing the idea.
“This is like a thank you and to make it a bit of fun for people,” he said.
“It feels good, it's what we should do. It's a simple idea and it's a feel-good thing.”
Rocklatino Cafe also offers a coffee, hot chocolate or soft drink for a bucket of beach rubbish, with buckets supplied at the cafe.
