Occasionally a friend will show you a hack, hint, tip or app that is a game changer.

Thinking back over the past decade there was Shazaam (tells you what song is playing), voice to text (hey Siri!) and even internet banking.

As consumers we are now always on the lookout for the next big thing to make our lives easier.

One very such breakthrough is a cool little app called Splitwise.

What is Splitwise?

Splitwise is a very simple, basic app that works on computer, Apple and Android devices to help you manage your finances among groups.

Simply put, it allows you to keep track of who owes what among your friends, partner, co-workers or even a group holiday.

It works like this: You establish a group with members and a name, “Weekend in Gold Coast”, “Wife & I” or “Drinks with the boys”.

When you pay for an expense you enter the type of expense, dollar figure and how you would like to split.

You can take on the full expense, assign it to a member or split it in any way you choose (equally among all members, percentage or dollars).

You can also add photos and images to the expense. From there it will add the transaction to your journal and adjust the figures of who owes what.

Finally, when you are ready to “settle up” you can record the payments made back to each other or even pay the other members of your group via PayPal.

No more “forgetting” to pay each other or “discussions” around how much it was again.

Splitwise is just one example of an app that you probably never went looking for.

It is one of those ideas that anyone could have thought of and quite frankly isn’t going to change your life. It is however an example of how technology can make simple tasks in life just a little easier on the day to day.
