Dog lover changes career to care for local pooches

Helen Gillard, Bargara Dog Resort, gave up her nursing career to care for pooches in the Bundaberg Region.

A love for dogs has opened up a new career path for Bargara woman Helen Gillard, who recently changed her role from full-time nurse to full-time carer to the coastal region’s furry friends.

Helen said her passion for dogs was the reason she opened Bargara Dog Resort, which provided dog walking, sitting and caring services in Bargara, Innes Park, Coral Cove and Burnett Heads.

“I officially started my business in October last year but I have been dog sitting for friends and family for a very long time,” she said.

“Bargara Dog Resort came about from my love of dogs and looking after friend's animals when they went away.”

“I gave up my nursing career-  I guess caring is just in my nature but now to my furry friends instead.”

Helen said Bargara Dog Resort not only focused on dog walking around the region, she also provided short home visits and pet sitting for those going on holidays.

“I love it when my clients get to go away for a holiday while their dog gets a holiday with me and my 11-year-old black labrador,” she said.

“When they stay at the resort they become part of our family walks, drives, family outdoor activities, play time, ball games and even quiet time when required.”

For dog walking services, Helen said different tracks were accessed for the hour-long sessions.

“I often visit each dog at their own house and walk in their local area or there might be an odd time I get permission to take them out some were special for the day,” she said.

“My home visits include pet feeding, replenishing water, disposal of doggie doo, play time, cuddle time and a walk if required.

“When the dogs come to stay with me we walk in our local suburb, beaches, parks and off leash areas which is all discussed with the owner on an initial meet and greet.”

Helen said since starting Bargara Dog Resort last year she had met many people and many pooches who had made her job enjoyable.

“What I love most is I get to spend quality time with all my pooches,” she said.

“I get to know their personalities and, believe me, they are all different!

“I think my work is beneficial for both the dogs and the owners,  the owner knows they are in caring lovable hands and the dogs love coming to play and socialise.”
