Work has begun on a childcare centre with places for 110 children on a prominent vacant block on the corner of Barolin and Walker Streets.

The development was approved in September 2022 following the lodgement of a Material Change of Use application for the centre at 60 Walker Street by applicant Rosalind Corporate Pty Ltd.

In September this year the development was granted operational works approval before commencing construction this week.

According to the application, the childcare centre will incorporate 110 places and 19 staff to cater for children aged from babies to four years and over.

There will be seven rooms included in the centre across a total gross floor area of 868.51 square metres with the design featuring a traditional and timber style.

Access to the Walkervale childcare centre will be from Lamb Street.

The application also outlines plans for two large outdoor play areas, 30 car parking spaces and landscaping.

“The proposed development will address the existing and anticipated demand for additional childcare places in the local area,” the application said.

“It will provide a purpose-built centre with high quality care and exceptional educational programs for greater childcare options for parents apart from the existing aging centres in the area.”

The application also stated that the Walkervale childcare centre would operate between the hours 6.30 am to 6.30 pm.

The site, at 60 Walker Street, was vacant land and is opposite the Southside Central Shopping Centre.

  1. I can’t believe that some muppet would think building a child centre right on a very busy intersection is a good idea. Drop offs, parking and child safety would be a nightmare
