Local heritage consultation has been given a boost with Bundaberg Regional Council introducing a Heritage Advisory Committee which recently met for the first time.
The newly developed Arts, Heritage and Asset Management portfolio, held by Cr John Learmonth, includes membership to a newly formed Heritage Committee featuring Council strategic planning staff and community members.
Cr Larine Statham-Blair also nominated to be a Councillor representative on the committee.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the committee would meet the expectations of the community which held a high regard for local history.
“The purpose of the Heritage Advisory Committee is to discuss and provide advice or recommendations on matters relevant to places of heritage significance within the Bundaberg Region,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The recommendations and advice put forward by the committee will be provided to Council to be considered as part of formal decision-making processes.”
There are six members of the committee with equal representation from Councillors, Council technical staff and community members who have been nominated by the Bundaberg Region Heritage Group.
Cr Learmonth said he looked forward to working with his fellow committee members and discussing matters relevant to the preservation and promotion of the region’s heritage.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate our past and identify opportunities to protect and preserve our history for future generations.
“You only need to walk down the beautiful Childers CBD or take a step inside our Bundaberg Art Gallery to appreciate the value of our heritage buildings to our community.
“I look forward to working with committee members to keep heritage at the forefront of Council decision-making.
“It is hoped that by having community members on the committee it will bring a fresh perspective and provide a direct avenue for community views to be considered in heritage matters which are before Council.”
