Greensill Farming Group plans to expand its machinery and packing shed at Qunaba near Bundaberg to process more sweet potatoes and other produce.

Bundaberg Regional Council recently received the material change of use application from Insite SJC on behalf of Greensill Farming Group to expand its machinery and packing shed on Windermere Road.

Planning and Development portfolio spokesperson Cr Ross Sommerfeld said the existing facility currently employs 70 staff in the packing shed, administration office and on the farm.

“The existing facility mostly processes sweet potatoes from the farm but the proposal includes plans to expand the packing shed so that additional products can be processed on site,” he said.

“Plans also include the construction of a new loading dock, the expansion of an existing loading dock to accommodate up to five trucks as well as providing seventy-three new parking spaces.”

The family-based agribusiness grows sweet potatoes, watermelons and sugarcane throughout the Bundaberg Region.

They have five farms and two packing facilities, growing and supplying more than 900,000 cartons of sweet potatoes each year.

Cr Sommerfeld said the application stated while the proposed expansion to the shed area on Windermere Road would not increase job numbers at the company, it would have a positive impact on the region.

“The application has highlighted that this expansion would contribute positively to the Bundaberg Region due to ‘downstream employment’ generated by the development including distribution and logistics,” he said.
