Parsons youngest ever winner of Tallon Medal

Mitchell Parsons received the Tallon Medal as the youngest ever winner of the ultimate BCA award and the prizemoney from the late Don Tallon’s daughter Cathy Parker.

Brothers captain Mitchell Parsons, 22, capped a superb coming of age season when he took out the coveted Tallon Medal for Division 1 Player of the Year at the Bundaberg Cricket Association Awards Night.

Mitchell had led his side to the Tallon/Giles Trophy in January and an upset Rum City Foods Premiership Grand Final victory over Minor Premiers Waves.

He polled 13 votes on the basis of officiating umpires allocating 3-2-1 points for each of the 21 rounds, to win the highest honour in Bundaberg Cricket by two from club-mates Luke Solano and 2020 Tallon Medallist Sam Pearson.

Waves stalwart Luke Owen picked up 12 votes but was ineligible for the award as he received a one-match suspension during the season.

Mitchell received the medal as the youngest ever winner of the ultimate BCA award and the prizemoney from the late Don Tallon’s daughter Cathy Parker.

Mitchell was also an integral part of the Headlands Pies team which completed back-to-back Aussie Bundy Big Bash titles and captained Bundaberg to the Goodchild Shield Grand Final, and the Bundaberg Invitational T20 side against the Bulls Masters.

East Bundy Magpies vintage veteran Lachlan Donovan and Waves captain Chris Duff shared third place on 10 points each.

Easts Bundy Magpies came from fourth position with two rounds remaining to win the Rum City Foods Division 2 Premiership – Team: Priyantha Mudalige, Rod Jensen, Will Barritt, Troy Cross, Logan Woodward, Laurie McCloskey, Greg Rehbein, Arty Richardson, Paul Rehbein, Graham Werner, Bayley Fagg, Jack Ford, James Beasley.

Mitchell was the 2021/22 BCA Division 2 Player of the Year despite making a late start to that season due to having undergone knee surgery following an injury sustained playing AFL.

He finished the season with 692 runs, including two centuries – one in the Tallon/Giles Trophy match – at an average of 49.43, second only in the batting aggregates to Luke Owen, who notched 708 runs at 44.25.

Waves veteran Sean Stuchbery took out the D1 Batting Average with 402 @ 57.43 despite playing just 9 matches in top grade.

A part-time bowler, Mitchell also snared 10 wickets, but the Bowling Aggregate went to Lachlan Donovan with 31, while Brothers’ Dean Krebs claimed the Average with 10.47.

Luke Owen received some consolation when he snared the Deem Family Trophy for Senior Representative Player of the Year, while club-mate Kori Pope took out the Representative Player of the Year Under-17-21.

Waves’ Kyle Stallan and YMCA’s Lex Webster were the Divisions 2 and 3 Players of the Year respectively.

Brothers young gun Jayden Santacaterina took home the Ray Haylock Trophy for Most Outstanding Young Player, while Junior Cricket Coordinator Brett Muller received the Service to Cricket Award for the second year in a row, this time as a joint-winner with Brothers president Anthony Rehbein.

All Junior Cricket Grand Finals were unfortunately washed out, with the Minor Premiers declared the Premiers, Norths Avengers (JC2-12s); North Bundy Bears (JC3-14s), and YMCA/Isis (JC3-16s).

Brothers captain Toby Lamond was the biggest winner in the individual honours taking out the JC3-16s Local Player of the Year and prestigious Don Tallon Player of the Year For Most Outstanding Representative Player in Junior Cricket 3-16s.

This was added to the Wide Bay U16 Player of the Final and Harry Buchbach Memorial Trophy for Wide Bay Junior Cricketer of the Year he had won two weeks earlier.

Norths run machine Tielman Nieuwoudt clinched the Laurie Gear Memorial Trophy For Most Outstanding Representative Player in Junior Cricket 2 or Junior 3-14s and Bundaberg U12 Rep Player of the Year, while Charlie Steele (Isis) shared the U14 Rep Player title with Norths’ Travis Kapernick, and Cooper Rehbein, of Isis, was a deserved winner of the Bundaberg U16 Rep Player gong.

The other Local Players of the Year were Tyson Melein (YMCA/Easts, JC2) and Caelan Barr (Hervey Bay, JC3-14s).

Robert Bailey-Rasmussen received the Bob Keir Memorial Trophy for Junior Volunteer of the Year.
