Rock on to the best 80s pub classics

Get your best 80s gear and head to the dance floor at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery's Rock On! event.

Dust off that stonewash denim and break out the hairspray as Bundaberg Regional Art Galleries takes you back in time to celebrate the best in 80s classics with Rock On!

The event celebrates the opening of the National Portrait Gallery’s Pub Rock exhibition which features the people, places, scenes and sounds defining 70s and 80s Australia.

Guests can enjoy live music, prizes for best dressed, pub rock delicacies and a complimentary drink on arrival with a paid bar available after that.

Better than your average pub grub, the menu will feature a range of tasty dishes named in tribute to classic 80s rock songs.

Local favourites the Spargo Brothers will take to the stage to blast out the best in iconic 80s rock anthems, this time under a different name.

Guitarist and vocalist Ben Spargo said the line-up would include Carl Spargo on bass and vocals and Dane Costigan on drums and vocals and considering this “cousin connection” they would be playing under the name Spartacus.

“The essentials for good pub rock [are] electric guitar, bass, drums and raw vocals,” Ben said.

“Not saying other instrumentation isn’t great but you don’t really need all the bells and whistles.

“Just a strong rhythm section and plenty of attitude.”

Ben said he was looking forward to playing any songs that would get people moving on the dance floor – Hunters and Collectors, Screaming Jets, Paul Kelly, AC/DC, Angels and John Butler Trio to name a few.

“[Expect] some good tunes, some good company, a tasty and creative selection of food, a few good laughs,” he said.

“Hopefully some great 80s costumes and of course some wonderful artwork on display for the exhibition.”

Local band the Spargo Brothers will be playing as Spartacus as they rock out the best 80s Aussie pub classics.

Best of the 80s with Ben Spargo:

  • Best 80s song: Holy Grail by Hunters & Collectors and Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes
  • Best 80s album: Back in Black by AC/DC
  • Best 80s outfit: MJ's Thriller costume
  • Best 80s movie: ET ha ha! Probably the Indiana Jones trilogy
  • Best 80s TV show: ALF
  • Best 80s food: Can that even be a category?
