A partnership between Council and the National Basketball League (NBL) Foundation Club Brisbane Bullets will be a slam dunk for local sports fans and the region’s economy.

The Brisbane Bullets are set to take on Cairns Taipans in a pre-season NBL game at the Bundaberg Multiplex on Saturday 26 August.

Bundaberg Regional Council has supported the event through its Sponsorship and Partnership program in addition to providing free venue hire at the Multiplex and game support including ticketing and equipment.

Brisbane Bullets CEO Mal Watts said the team were excited to be coming to the Bundaberg Region.

“We are looking forward to heading to Bundaberg to face Cairns in what will be a great opportunity for the team to continue their positive start in the pre-season,” he said.

“Playing a pre-season match in regional Queensland provides us with a fantastic opportunity to engage with the passionate Bundaberg basketball community.

“Bringing two NBL teams to a regional community is a great opportunity to connect with fans and participants that don’t often get the chance to see their heroes up close and in person.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the support we’ve received from Bundaberg Regional Council in making this pre-season game possible.”

Mayor Jack Dempsey said the game would be an opportunity to showcase the Multiplex’s top-class facilities.

“It’s great to see the facilities we have in Bundaberg are attracting this level of national competition,” Mayor Dempsey said.

“The Brisbane Bullets haven’t been to the Bundaberg Region for over 30 years, and we are thrilled they are bringing elite level basketball to the region.

“This is the first time we have had two NBL teams in the Bundaberg Region at the same time.”

Council’s Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Councillor Vince Habermann said it was great to be welcoming two more National teams to Bundaberg after the recent National Rugby League clash between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Redcliffe Dolphins.

“This game being a Queensland Derby between the Brisbane Bullets and the Cairns Taipans will be a real showcase of their talents, sure to inspire local aspiring sports people and lift community spirits,” Cr Habermann said.
