World class racing is coming to the region over three exciting days this month as the Bundaberg Cycling Spectacular expands to include the Queensland Masters Criterium Championships.

The annual event will feature track and road racing action over a three-day cycling weekend from 24 to 26 November.

Two days of track cycling will take place at the Kevin Brogden Velodrome, followed by the 2023 Queensland Masters Criterium Cycling Championships taking to the open streets of Bundaberg.

Bundaberg Regional Council has supported the Bundaberg Cycling Club in hosting the Bundaberg Cycling Spectacular since its inception and has this year provided financial support of $10,000 under its Partnership and Sponsorship Funding Program.

Bundaberg Regional Council Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Cr Vince Habermann said Council was proud to be a platinum sponsor of the event which was a major draw card for international and national riders.

“The Bundaberg Cycling Spectacular will shine a global spotlight on the Bundaberg Region and demonstrate our capacity to deliver first-class sporting events,” Cr Habermann said.

“Events like this give a boost to tourism and our economy.

“The cycling community is huge in Bundaberg and has produced international cycling competitors and champions.

“It will be very exciting to see the community come together and support this event.”

Bundaberg Cycling Club President Wayne Morden said the 2022 Bundaberg Cycling Spectacular attracted high performance cyclists from the Victorian Institute of Sport and the Queensland Academy of Sport.

“We are working closely with directors from Victorian Institute of Sport, South Australia Sports Academy and Queensland Academy of Sport to finalise elite riders,” Wayne said.

“Currently [we] have coming to this year’s event: Hans Pirius, a German national team member and Byron Davies and Victoria Smith from the Queensland Academy of Sport.”

“With the addition of the Queensland Masters Criterium Championships scheduled for the Sunday morning, we expect to exceed 150 competitors coming to Bundaberg and anticipate we could have as many as 200 riders.

“The Bundaberg Cycling Club has a long and proud history of highlighting the sport of cycling throughout the Bundaberg Region and across the world.”
