More than seven million kilograms of recyclable materials have been saved from landfill through the efforts of residents using their yellow-lidded wheelie bins.
Bundaberg Regional Council Waste and Recycling portfolio spokesperson Cr Tanya McLoughlin congratulated residents on the impressive figure being brought into focus as part of National Recycling Week.
“We’re certainly seeing some really positive trends in recycling and we know that most residents are doing what they can to Recycle Right,” Cr McLoughlin said.
“Through our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) 7,033,00 kg of material has been recycled.
“Council waste facilities have also facilitated the recycling of items like E-Waste, green waste, steel, tyres, batteries, paint, x-rays, oils and mobile phones.
“In the past 12 months we’ve also seen a great take up of recycling programs including Containers for Change and RedCycle.”
The materials recycled at the MRF included:
– 128,000 kg of milk bottles
– 1,523,000 kg of cardboard
– 2,650,000 kg of paper
Other Council waste facilities also recycled:
– 219,000 kg of E-Waste
– 8,528,000 kg of green waste
– 26,000 litres of paint
– 21,000 litres of engine oil
– 2774 car and vehicle batteries
“While we hope people are keeping recycling in mind all year long, there’s no better time than National Recycling Week to learn more about how to Recycle Right,” Cr McLoughin said.
“During the week we’re encouraging residents to keep up the great work and add one or two new recycling habits to their weekly routine.
“Just a couple of small changes could have a huge impact on the amount of waste going to landfill if we all work together.
“To help, Council has produced an easy to follow video about the best recycling journey for different types of recyclable materials.
“This is a great way to better explain the best way to dispose of different materials that will ensure your recycling efforts don’t go to waste.”
Planet Ark's National Recycling Week golden rules of recycling include:
– Ensuring you check the label for the Australasian Recycling symbol before placing in the recycling bin
– Put it in loose – we can’t accept recyclable items if they’re in bags
– Make sure you’re buying it back – help to complete the cycle by looking for products that use recycled materials
