The construction of a new connection road will act as an evacuation route during flooding events when work is complete in June.
The Bundaberg Regional Council project began at Apple Tree Creek this week, with work taking place from the end of Hamanns Road to Creeveys Road.
Councils Roads and Drainage Portfolio Spokesperson Cr Bill Trevor said the aim of the project was to reduce the risk of local resident isolation during flood events.
“The evacuation route will facilitate local community access provisions through to Gentle Annie Road during Apple Tree Creek flood events when Hamanns Road is cut off from the Bruce Highway,” he said.
Cr Trevor said work would be conducted in two stages, with the first stage to be completed in 12 weeks, weather permitting.
He said the second stage would begin in April.
“Construction will include the creation of a sealed road connecting Hamanns Road to Creevey’s Road and through to Gentle Annie Road,” Cr Trevor said.
“Council crews will be raising a portion of Duguid Road to facilitate access during flood events.”
Cr Trevor said as part of the project, drainage upgrades along Stocks Road had also been implemented.
“This part of the work has been underway for many weeks with the upgrade to box culverts,” he said.
Cr Trevor said Bundaberg Regional Council was aware of the inconvenience the construction caused and thanked residents and road users for their patience and co-operation.
The project is funded under both the Roads to Recovery Program and Works for Queensland Round 3 Program.
