The Firehouse Potters held their annual Clay Cafe fundraising event and were entertained by the potters choir.

The old fire station at Childers was decked out with retro outfits and groovy sounds from the ā€™60s and ā€™70s for the Firehouse Potters annual Clay Cafe fundraiser.

Firehouse Potters secretary Diane Graham said about 90 members and guests immersed themselves in the atmosphere from the years gone by.

But it wasnā€™t just the retro styled clothing that was on show, the handmade and decorated pottery bowls or plates had diners licking their lips as they were filled with delicious cuisine from two decades.

Bundaberg Region Deputy Mayor Bill Trevor and Councillors Judy Peters and Wayne Honor attended the Saturday evening event to show support to the local group.

The Firehouse Potters entertained their guests with a ‘Pottery Song' to the tune of Waltzing Matilda with musical accompaniment provided by the Horner family.

ā€œSome lucky people took home various lucky door and multi-raffle prizes and ā€˜Docā€™ was the winner of the major prize – a handmade and tiled letterbox,ā€ Diane said.

Diane said the aim of the Firehouse Potters was to provide friendship and fun in a creative space where there are no mistakes, but sometimes there are odd and unusual ā€œobjet dā€™artā€.

Everyone is welcome to go along and try their hand at either wheel work, hand building, moulds, sculpture, slab construction, extrusion plus much more.

ā€œWe are a group of people, of all ages and from all walks of life,ā€ she said.

The group has a wealth of knowledge between the members and are always happy to help out.

ā€œIf you would like to learn a particular skill, just ask,ā€ Dianne said.

ā€œWe also host workshops with specialist tutors, where you can learn from the experts.ā€

The Firehouse Potters are open twice a week, Monday and Saturday, and can be found at 89A Churchill St, Childers or phone Diane 0427 566 124.

You can catch the potters next month at the Childers Festival were they will be giving demonstrations.
