The old fire station at Childers was decked out with retro outfits and groovy sounds from the ’60s and ’70s for the Firehouse Potters annual Clay Cafe fundraiser.
Firehouse Potters secretary Diane Graham said about 90 members and guests immersed themselves in the atmosphere from the years gone by.
But it wasn’t just the retro styled clothing that was on show, the handmade and decorated pottery bowls or plates had diners licking their lips as they were filled with delicious cuisine from two decades.
Bundaberg Region Deputy Mayor Bill Trevor and Councillors Judy Peters and Wayne Honor attended the Saturday evening event to show support to the local group.
The Firehouse Potters entertained their guests with a ‘Pottery Song' to the tune of Waltzing Matilda with musical accompaniment provided by the Horner family.
“Some lucky people took home various lucky door and multi-raffle prizes and ‘Doc’ was the winner of the major prize – a handmade and tiled letterbox,” Diane said.
Firehouse Potters
Diane said the aim of the Firehouse Potters was to provide friendship and fun in a creative space where there are no mistakes, but sometimes there are odd and unusual “objet d’art”.
Everyone is welcome to go along and try their hand at either wheel work, hand building, moulds, sculpture, slab construction, extrusion plus much more.
“We are a group of people, of all ages and from all walks of life,” she said.
The group has a wealth of knowledge between the members and are always happy to help out.
“If you would like to learn a particular skill, just ask,” Dianne said.
“We also host workshops with specialist tutors, where you can learn from the experts.”
The Firehouse Potters are open twice a week, Monday and Saturday, and can be found at 89A Churchill St, Childers or phone Diane 0427 566 124.
