Hughes Road extension progress
Stage four of the Hughes Road extension is progressing on schedule.

New aerial footage shows the progress of the final stage of the Hughes Road extension set to be completed early next year.

The 1.5km stretch of road connects the newly completed roundabout at the intersection of Hughes and Watsons Road to previous stages of the project on Wearing Road.

Bundaberg Regional Council roads and drainage spokesman Cr Bill Trevor said Council crews were undertaking the works and tracking on schedule.

“Work has been progressing well to date on the Hughes Road extension project which will provide a more direct route between Bargara and southern coastal suburbs,” Cr Trevor said.

“This missing link is stage four of a project that has been under way for a number of years and is part of Council’s commitment to providing greater connectivity for coastal communities.”

Construction is well under way on the site as the two-lane road, drainage and pathways start to take shape.

Council will engage a contractor to install turtle-friendly lighting along the length of the Hughes Road extension.

“This project is part of the greater North-South Link project however, in the short term, the Hughes Road extension will prove beneficial to residents,” Cr Trevor said.

“It will reduce traffic on residential streets and provide faster and more direct access to shopping facilities and services.”

With the Hughes Road extension making great progress, work is expected to be completed by March 2020, weather permitting.

The extension of Hughes Road between Watsons and Rifle Range Roads forms part of the long-term North South Link project, designed to provide greater connectivity between coastal communities.

Funding for the work has been made available through government programs including Roads to Recovery and TIDS.
